Stick-on Gems

It’s EDC, so it’s time to pull out all the stops! Stick-on gems add all the bling to your rave look. There are single press-on rhinestones or packs of jewels you can apply above your eyebrows or below your eyes. Some are even reusable and can be applied with eyelash glue if the stick starts to fade!

Temporary Tattoos

Be a show-stopper by applying temporary tats to your face! You can use them on your cheekbones, next to your eyes, or above your brows. You can also pair them with face jewels to put them around your body as seen above.

Colorful Inner Corners

This is my personal go-to rave look. I do my classic black eyeliner wing with no shadow on my lid - but then I add a pop of neon color to the inner corner of my eyes. I especially love doing this with shimmery, holographic eye shadow. It brightens and draws attention to the eyes.

Rainbow colors

Go with the full rainbow spectrum this EDC! You can apply ROYGBIV to each eyelid - or, do red, orange, and yellow on one lid, and green, blue, and purple on the other lid for a look that spans your whole face

Bright brows

Filling in your brows is a common step for applying makeup, but have you ever tried a vivid, colorful brow? You can use eye shadow or even a colored liner to fill them in with a color of your choice, letting your brows take the center stage of your look!

Monochrome

If you’re doing a single colored outfit, like an all pink or an all neon green look, stick with that monochrome color for your makeup. It will tie your whole look together. Adding some stick-on rhinestones that match your color will put the cherry on top.

Holographic Highlighter

I’m obsessed with holographic, shimmery, color-shifting makeup! Adding some holographic color to your cheekbones will keep you looking like a shimmery fairy all night long.

Bold Patterns

Have you ever tried to paint on cow spots, plaid lines, or fluffy clouds to your eyelids? EDC could be the opportunity you’re waiting for! Depending on your outfit, match a bold pattern and apply it to your eyes.

Hot or Cold

Would you go with red, orange, yellow, or green, blue, purple? Pick a side - warm or cool - and use that for your makeup inspiration. You can use colored liners, shimmery eye shadows, and vivid lipstick to make this hot or cold look come to life. Bonus points: your best friend can be the hot to your cold, or vice versa!

No matter which makeup idea you go for, be sure to apply setting spray before heading to EDC to lock in your makeup for a long night of dancing! It’s smart to bring eyelash glue or lipstick with you in case of an emergency re-apply. The hardest part, for me at least, is not touching my face once my makeup is on! If applied correctly and set in place with setting spray, it’s best not to mess with it. But, I would recommend sticking a few cotton swabs in your bag, just in case you need to touch up the area under your eyes. We’ll all be crying during our favorite sets, but we’ve got to keep our makeup looking fire. Remember to stay hydrated and have an amazing time under the electric sky!

Bonnaroo can be incredibly fun or be the complete opposite if you come unprepared! The event is just around the corner so I thought I’d provide tips and tricks that you’ll need to plan a successful and stress-free experience at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

Do Your Research Before Buying Your Ticket

The festival’s website provides plenty of information on all the different ticket types available. If it’s your first time going, it’s worth reading through it to understand what’s included in each ticket to find the one that’s right for you. There are quite a few ticket options that determine the experience you'll have. You can do anything from GA to an ultra-VIP experience that includes a nicer camping area, golf cart transportation to each stage, unlimited food and drink and special viewing at each stage.

Always remember, festival admission tickets do not include camping passes, so you’ll need to buy them separately. You can also choose tiered camping passes based on the experience you want to have. Tickets and camping passes range from affordable prices to higher prices for a more luxury experience, but give a lot of variety to pick from. You can get both camping and festival passes here.

Plan How You’re Getting There Ahead of Time

Driving is the most popular travel option for Bonnaroovians. Most people drive into the festival, either by car, RV, or uHaul… But if driving isn’t your thing, rest assured there are also shuttle routes departing from different places to get you to the festival grounds. No matter which mode of transport you go for, you need to pre-book your pass with your festival ticket. Make sure you do so in advance before they sell out!

The drive to Manchester is about an hour outside of Nashville or about three and a half hours northwest of Atlanta. Both airports are easily accessible from most US cities and offer lots of rental car options.

Plan to Get There Early

When you’re making your travel plans, keep in mind that the sooner you arrive the closer to the festival entrance you’ll be! The campgrounds fill from front to back so as long as you plan your trip accordingly you won’t get stuck in one of the furthest campsites. Anticipate long lines as you get closer to the festival, so add at least an hour to your travel time for the time you'll spend waiting in line.

Packing is Essential, Be Prepared for Rain

Sunshine isn’t always in the forecast, it’s not uncommon for it to rain and for temperatures to drop. And when it rains at Bonnaroo it pours, so the festival grounds can get really muddy. Bring what you need to stay dry and warm if the weather turns:

• Warm layers
• Poncho
• Boots
• Thick sleeping bag/blanket

…But Also Be Prepared for Sunshine

On the other hand, it can also get very hot and sunny which requires a whole other list of essentials. Whatever you do, before you start packing check the weather forecast to ensure you have everything you need to enjoy your time at the festival. Here are a few necessities you should think about packing:

• Hat
• Sunglasses
• Sunscreen
• Hand fan
• Hydration pack

Bring the Right Footwear

Depending on which area you’re assigned to at the campgrounds, you might end up having to walk quite a distance to get to the thick of the action in Centeroo. Blisters can easily ruin your entire festival weekend so bring the right footwear and socks. Or if you can’t forego your platforms, make sure you have a few dollars to spare each day to catch a pedicab from the campgrounds to Centeroo, and back!

The Festival Grounds Get Dusty

When it doesn’t rain at Bonnaroo a giant cloud of dust will start to surface as soon as the masses of people start trampling all over the festival grounds. Make sure you bring a bandana or face mask to avoid ingesting heaps of dust.

Baby Wipes are Your Best Bet to Stay Clean

Bonnaroo showers are notoriously dirty and the queues can take forever! Arm yourself with some baby wipes to combat any sand, mud or sweat you encounter and need to wipe off.

Pack a Flashlight With Extra Batteries

The campgrounds are massive so finding your tent can be tricky, particularly late at night when it’s dark and you’re tired. Pack a flashlight to make it easier to find your way back! It will definitely come in handy when you’re walking through the campgrounds late at night and even in some parts of the festival.

Bring a Totem/Flag/Floatie

The festival is the size of a small town, over 100,000 people attend each year so it’s really easy to lose your friends in the crowd. Have a totem, flag or floatie that you can spot from a distance and you’ll never lose your group again! When you’re not using it in the crowd you can hang it at your campsite so you’ve got something to look out for when you’re walking back to your tent.

Arrange Your Ride for a Quick and Easy Car Check

Be mindful of what you pack, check Bonnaroo’s official list of prohibited items before you load up your vehicle to prepare for a seamless car check on arrival. Car checks are random but you never know if you’ll end up having your vehicle searched so always respect the rules and be prepared.

If You’re Traveling as a Group, Stay Together

Ensure that everyone in your group that wants to camp together gets in line together, this will guarantee you get to set up next to one another. Bonnaroo crew members won’t wait on your group and definitely won’t save spots for anyone on the campgrounds.

The Mothership Stage: Far Out Among the Stars

As gates opened and RESIDUO welcomed ravers to this intergalactic party,  they were greeted by the legendary flying saucer PHXLIGHTS sign inspiring those to snag a quick picture with their rave families, or should I say fellow space cadets? When the sun finally vanished to reveal the stars in the black sky, night 1’s special B2B performance showcased JOYRYDE B2B Habstrakt was loved to the moon and back.

Watching JOYRYDE collaborate with a friend and fellow DJ-producer Habstrakt on stage livened him to express his delight that spread to the crowd’s body language. JOYRYDE said he was grateful to be there at PHXLIGHTS with his friends and family while rainbow visuals were displayed in the background. With this masterful combination of these two heavy-hitting names, it created another flavor of bass house that felt extremely special to PHXLIGHTS.

If this set couldn't become more special for this duo, JOYRYDE asked the crowd to wish Habstrakt him a happy birthday and the crowd without hesitation proceeded. In the midst of everyone dancing themselves clean, a rave family dressed as a group of astronauts in full helmet gear! 

For the past three years in Arizona’s EDM scene, the spinning cloths, formally known as flow stars, weren't extremely popular, but they were popular in Arizona this weekend! It was eye-opening to see this new and upcoming change happening in the local flow art print paired with matching Kritter Klips and a tail!

It wasn’t exactly related to aliens but it was a space-strawberry-inspired look! Seeing this specific outfit inspired me to buy matching Kritter Klips and corresponding tail at The Dreamland Studios vending booth! One unexpected perk about this festival map: there was always a food vendor in close proximity to every stage which saved time!

On night 2, ALLEYCVT shared her space bass transcending the crowd, followed by Apashe and Dr. Oliver Tree. After, the crowd finally made it to their destination into a futuristic soundscape with Deorro B2B Valentine Khan and Kaskade.

Extraterrestrial Earthlings at The Evo Silent Disco 

Two channels hosting to the sounds of house, bass, DnB, and the genre-bending combination of all of it was a perfect spot to spend time away from the main stage if you needed a break from the crowd. Plus, who doesn't like channel surfing to give support to all of the artists? By the end of the night 1, most people scattered this stage’s dance floor to see Seven Lions.

Even though PRETTYHARD’s performance was the second to last set for this stage, Sed’s Vortex was seen at the front of the stage supporting him–seeing DJ-producer-couples support one another is another form of PLUR in my book! Night 2 scheduled artists DOMINATRIX, SAFEWORD, and more to continue Arizona’s trip beyond the galaxy. 

BeatBox Invasion Stage: Abducted by the Sound

Near the outskirts of the BeatBox Invasion Stage, Weird & Wonderful cast members were dressed in chrome outfits and large green yoda ears! If you’re a stage-hopper like me, watching performers in full character on the way to the next stage deserves to be listed on the itinerary of fun at every festival!

Despite the Invasion stage being a side stage, many would think this stage wouldn’t rise to the occasion with a packed stage, but this stage was packed during SEPPI’s hardcore performance that had everyone dancing to every bass drop on night 1! District XII, a local heavy riddim DJ, still had dancers clinging to every heavy bass drop because Arizona celebrates local artists from their community like any other headliner! Night 2 carried another well-loved riddim DJ-producer BLVCKROSE, Cafe Caderas, and more to end the weekend’s excursion. 

With 180 events taking place anywhere from 8-12 hours each day, some of those events include the well-known Ultra Music Festival, The Electronic Dance Music Awards, and Afterlife at the Miami Marine Stadium. Turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and pool parties claim the territory of Downtown Miami and Collins Avenue on Miami Beach all week, making MMW a sophisticated experience all ravers should experience. 

Planning your event and performance schedule every MMW is incredibly unique to you as you can plan events around the clock for 24-hours according to your favorite artists, organizers, and venues! Visiting some of the most renowned venues in the EDM scene such as Factory Town and Club Space is a bucket-list experience, especially if you’re dying to expose yourself outside of your local scene!  

In general, some B2B sets may reappear on different festival lineups here and there in order to reach the ears and hearts of more ravers. However, Miami Music Week truly curates B2B sets or even B2B2BB2B you can only experience for one and one night only making it a once-in-a -lifetime experience every year.

This week also encourages so many artists to share new music in the form of unreleased tracks, the debut of their record label’s events, or music from their side projects. 

The EDMAs: The Grammy’s of Electronic Dance Music

New ravers: have you ever heard of The Electronic Dance Music Awards (EDMAs)? In short, the EDMAs it’s an exclusive, upscale, and free red carpet event happening during Miami Music Week, look no further! Located at the Eden Roc Hotel, The EDMAs organizes surprise performers and a secret lineup announced just before the event begins.

EDM-enthusiasts can vote for their favrite artists, record labels, and request their favorite artists to appear as the guest performers. Thursday’s pre-party featured Luci, Dev, HAYLA, Sam Blacky and more! Friday's party (and afterparty) showcased deadmau5, Electric Polar Bears B2B Kastra, Tim Clark, and Kaskade! Eden Roc Hotel as a venue creates a close atmosphere for fans to meet their favorite artists as they hop off the small stage next to the Miami Beach shore!

The time to experience your favorite artist in the front row without fighting your way to the front is now and here at the EDMAs. This hotel-turned-venue even sells fresh coconut water with the Eden Roc Hotel logo branded on the coconut–take a walk on the finer, classy side! For a full recap of the winners, visit here. The Beauty of BLNK CNVS 

If you ever find yourself in Miami, BLNK CNVS curates some of the rarest and hedonistic-good EDM events! In short, good music is the name of the game for this organizer, especially curating 31 events in total for the entire week! Some of the most notable events were Deadbeats vs. Cyclops Recordings, Sidepiece: Kiss & Tell Pool Party, and Rezz - Can You See Me with special guest Dr. Fresch to name a few.

The rare element in BLNK CNVS events during MMW isn’t just their excellent showcase of surprise/secret guest performers but also its underground, experimental nature in lineup curation. One of the most secret lineups during the week was SVDDEN DEATH’s Miami debut of his dark house project Dead Room which featured Smoakland and SVDDEN DEATH himself! This specific event didn’t release a lineup, but SVDDEN DEATH shared the flier and ticket link like an easter egg surprise for those who love his side project!

At Deadbeats vs. Cyclops Recordings, Subtronics was the secret B2B guest artist performing alongside Zeds Dead! Subtronics shared his new remix of “Black Ice” with the crowd and made them feel like they couldn’t hear it anywhere else!

The dance floor was in a frenzy and by the end of the night, the dance floor was glistening with a layer of everyone’s fallen drinks–feral, right? And, if I’m being honest, seeing Marie Antoinette paintings at Mad Club Wynwood during Walker & Royce: Rules Don’t Apply felt like I was transcended into a rich mindset that didn’t include eating cake, but consuming some of the best EDM out there! 

John Summit in His Natural Habitat - Experts Only + Repopulate Mars MMW Opening at Factory Town 

Despite John Summit rising to fame from Chicago, IL, John Summit becomes an entirely different kind of feral animal when performing in Miami! John Summit, one of the biggest names in (tech) house, is the label head of Experts Only which used to be named Off The Grid.

As for Repopulate Mars, Lee Foss is the legend of deep house behind this label. Organized by Link Miami Rebels, this debut event taking place from 7pm-7am: Experts Only + Repopulate Mars was the opening night commencing both labels’ event series as the first of many to surface the EDM scene!

As many know John Summit as a master in house, Experts Only (including Experts Only Radio) allows him to produce anything and everything without creative limits! Don’t believe me? Check out this new unreleased ID taking place that night at Factory Town: John Summit x Tape B x Subtronics remix of Sage The Gemini’s “Gas Pedal”.

If you’re wondering if he screamed in the microphone, “Miami, how the fuck we feeling, baby?”, he indeed did it three times throughout the night. Other than John Summit and Lee Foss, Joshwa, Deeper Purpose, and Jake Shore. Seeing Joshwa B2B Lee Foss B2B Detlef was magic I know I wouldn’t have found anywhere else other than Miami Music Week!  

It’s Raining Dance Moves 

We all know ravers were in for a surprise to find themselves shuffling in murky puddles and trading kandi in plastic ponchos in the rain at Ultra Music Festival. But, what about other events happening at the same time? In MMW’s defense, dancing in the rain always feels cinematic! If you were anything like me, you waited in your hotel room in the hopes of saving yourself from catching a cold. Factory Town and other venues were forced to postpone events for safety reasons just as Ultra Music Festival.

Pool parties were either postponed until weather conditions improved or were moved indoors, so it wasn’t a disaster by any means. But, flight delays soon followed and I decided to stay in Miami for an extra day spending the afternoon on the beach with a coconut–don’t you love happy accidents? Allow this be a cautionary tale to always check the weather before planning your MMW experience! 

Scenic Beaches and DJ-Artists Sightings

After Saturday’s rainstorms, “Happy Miami Music Week” was the message gleamed across the sky of Miami beach shores’ skies from an airplane banner, on the dance floor between never-seen-before performances. Most pool parties taking place on Collins Avenue had exits that lead directly on white-sand paths leading to beach shores on your way to another event. In the best way, I wasn’t used to this as most festival campgrounds lead to forests or deserts! Most DJ-producers are there at MMW to perform, accept an award at The EDMAs, or partake in the experience as well! It’s casual to see artists join their friends on stage for surprise B2B sets or to enjoy the ambiance.

I happened to see Walker & Royce and Nala join the stage to enjoy the vibes during John Summit’s performance at Factory Town! Not only that, I met Wenzday in line at Mad Club Wynwood and she happened to remember when I interviewed her in 2023! It wasn’t long until I saw one of her best friends BIJOU follow behind. It’s seeing your favorite artists in their natural habitat of music that makes MMW magical!

As an artist singing for all to feel less alone with her heartfelt lyrics, her new solo track “Embers” accomplishes just that. Famous for combining beauty, ferocity, and vulnerability in her voice, “Embers” is one new release out of many to come along with other projects this 2024. I, Mary Mason, on the behalf of savormeditation, collected HAYLA’s jewels of wisdom: giving oneself the license to experiment, the meaning behind the song lyrics in “Embers”, and the life lessons which motivate her to seek true expression while at this year’s Electronic Dance Music Awards. 

iHR: Thank you so much for your time! It’s an honor to interview you, especially under these circumstances being here at the EDMAs! How do you feel after your performance? 

HAYLA: Singing is my favorite thing to do, so honestly, I was honored when they asked me to perform here at the EDMAs! It’s my first time in Miami and to be surrounded by this, I had a few moments where I had my eyes opened to the amazing area–the setting is incredible. The audience sang along and danced a little bit too! It was an early performance and really cool! 

iHR: How did you prepare for this performance since performing for the EDMAs can be different from any other club or festival appearance?

HAYLA: I knew we had the time slot that we did. I knew the tracks I wanted to perform were the collaborations I had before: the crowd-pleasers, but I love singing those songs. You write and perform them, but seeing people sing them, I think that connective part is the best part. I also wanted to perform some of my own music, so I performed my upcoming single “Embers”.

iHR: Speaking of “Embers”, with lyrics: “Fire burn in the darkness/ Take a breath/ Fill my lungs with you/ Memories of us/ See the embers of dust and it all fell apart”. Can you tell me more about the meaning behind them? 

HAYLA: “Embers” was written with my good friend Martin Mason MIles and produced by the amazing MotherEarth. I wrote this song about being able to burn everything that reminds you of a person to ashes except that tiny ember that won't let anything other than time put it out. 

iHR: What was your favorite part of the process when filming the music video for your collaborative track with John Summit, “Shiver”? 

HAYLA: It was an incredible day! I’ve never been on a big set like that before. Seeing the inner-workings of how something like that works and seeing the set is what makes it incredible. It was great to see the amount of people who knew what they were doing and moving to the speed of things. Obviously, me and John are friends now which made it fun to be on set together; he’s so lovely. 

iHR: With that, you and John Summit create an otherworldly duo, what is your favorite thing about working with him?

HAYLA: Thank you! I think he has a euphoric way of producing. I feel like all of his drops and chord sequences make it atmospheric. Because the sound is always so vast, but it allows my vocal to breathe as well. I think when you’re working with producers you try to make sure no part gets. He’s kept the integrity of my vocal which I appreciate. It’s just so fun to sing along because it's like that big sound like the music behind us now is doing. He’s just a great producer, he has a great ear, and I feel like it’s emotional as well.

iHR: Which female singers inspired you to become the powerful vocalist you are today? 

HAYLA: Whitney Houston! Definitely! I was obsessed! The first musical thing I ever had was The Bodyguard on tape. I used to have this Fisher Price karaoke machine when I was four-years-old and I used to sit there, play it, and reverse it. I have a recording of it, it’s actually hilarious! Whitney was my #1 idol, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand–quite a few of artists I grew up listening to with my parents. We always listened to music constantly; they’re not musicians themselves but it was a massive part of my life growing up. I think I just latched on, especially because my mom and I would sing together. We still do! 

iHR: Congratulations on all of your well-deserved EDMA nominations and awards! How has this recognition and impact of the awards made you feel? 

HAYLA: I think it’s incredible! I’m so grateful to have the recognition! It means a lot! I had an interview and didn’t realize I had won at first. The recognition isn’t lost on me, so It really does mean a lot! 

iHR: 2023 was a pivotal year for your discography, what helped you stay motivated to create? 

HAYLA: That’s a really good question actually! I think you can have those bouts of doubt. I felt like I had a creative role,  a few things to say and get off my chest. The nice thing about writing is it can sometimes be like a diary. So, you might write something and it may not look like anything at all. Then, you piece it together like a jigsaw puzzle–a diary but a crossword. 

iHR: As a writer, it reminds me of some lines/song lyrics mattering more than others. 

HAYLA: Yeah! Kind of like: what’s that? I’m feeling that but what about it sticks out? Maybe this line is more relatable to others, maybe it can help people feel less alone and not on their own. This year, I definitely like I had a lot more to say as an artist. It doesn’t always happen because you can have those moments like: oh, shit, I guess I have nothing to say here. But, I felt like there was more to say! I feel as if I’m in control of my mind a bit more. HAYLA points to her head. Write, please! 

iHR: I love your festival fashion so much because I am a HUGE fan of black, latex, leather, anything that emulates dominatrix fashion. What inspires your choice of performance outfits? 

HAYLA: I’ve always loved the gothic-alternative look. Black is my favorite color. I choose what I wear by feeling a lot of the time. All of my clothes are black, so how am I going to choose? I was experimenting a little bit and I felt like I wasn’t elevating myself to the level I wanted to be at. So, I found Beau Tiger Rae who is my amazing stylist that I’ve been working with. He’s given me a license to experiment. I was experimenting and I was wondering is that for me? He said, “Yes, it’s for you. Why wouldn’t it be for you?”. Dressing up is fun and it’s for everybody! I think it’s an extension of expressing the self! He’s given me more license especially because he finds me pieces and he’ll ask, “Would you wear that? I think you’ll look good in it.” I try the fashion piece on and I think: I should have always had this. I’ve always loved fashion, leather, and latex. I have a pair of Doc Martens I’ve had for as long as I can remember; they’re battered and beaten up, but I am never getting rid of them. My expression has been elevated a little bit more now. 

iHR: It’s wonderful to hear you and your stylist are allowing for more creative freedom even in this aspect of your self-expression because I think allowing creative freedom can spread to other parts of your artistry. 

HAYLA: It’s funny actually because I feel like it’s a tidbit of feeling more daring like yeah, I’m going to do that. Yeah, I’m going to wear that. And, feel comfortable in it! I feel like I’ve given myself license in other ways as well. 

iHR: You’ve curated almost 10 years of your discography, is there a part of your artistic expression you’d like to change or strengthen?  

HAYLA: Oh, my gosh, yes! I’ve always played musical instruments to a degree where I form an understanding, but I don’t push myself further with it. I really want to become better at playing piano because I would love to be able to show that to people. Also, playing guitar. I need to get over being freaked-out about showing people that! I’ve developed more confidence in other areas like writing in who I am as HAYLA–that side that people see. Other things I wished I had taken more time and care in cultivating. I still have hurdles to chip down, I think my mission should focus on trying to get over those hurdles and stick to something, so I can be more multifaceted as well. I’d like to write my completely own stuff without relying on anybody else. I love working with other people, but I’d like to be more self-sufficient. 

iHR: It’s admirable and inspiring that you show a lot of grace with this concept of confidence as a process. 

HAYLA: It’s funny because some people expect confidence to fully be present sometimes. At times, confidence can show up depending on the day, the mood, feelings, emotions. It’s a total process! There are times where you’re not feeling great, but you still have to take an hour to listen to your favorite music and take deep breaths to get yourself centered. 

iHR: I’m curious, what is a recurring life lesson you keep learning? 

HAYLA: I’ve doubted myself so much throughout my life about loads of things. I know everyone does. I’m a terrible overthinker, my God, if I could turn that off I would. I think in the past if I second-guessed myself, I was putting it off for no reason. It’s like you against what your anxious mind is telling you not to do, it’s there to prove yourself wrong and going forward and thinking like why can’t this space be for me? Why can’t I do that? Why can’t I wear this? Why can’t do those things? In the most healthy way, it’s kind of like giving myself the excuse to do it anyway! 

iHR: What is next in store for you this year?

HAYLA: I have been working on an album; it’s nearly done. I think we’re looking at November for the release date hopefully. I’m really looking forward to that! There’s a few collaborations as well that I can’t say anything about just yet. Maybe some gigs and touring at the end of the year. 

The History of Pride Month

Pride month began as a protest and riot in New York City's West Village on June 28, 1969 when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular safe haven for LGBTQ people at the time. In those days, dressing up as a person of the opposite sex was a crime, and many LGBTQI people were forced to live in secret or risk arrest.

Gay bars at the time operated in secret, or at least kept their patronage fairly under wraps to protect the people that they served. Bars served as a safe space for LGBTQI people, offering a space of refuge in a society that didn't welcome or accept them for who they were.

The Stonewall Riots began when Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two trans women of color, sparked a riot outside of the Stonewall Inn to protest the police raid that happened there that day (though there is speculation that Johnson didn't arrive until later). The riots sparked what we now celebrate as Pride after the event triggered protests for LGBTQI liberation around the world.

Throughout history, raves and underground dance music events have been a safe space for LGBTQI youth to celebrate themselves and feel welcomed for who they are. Some of your favorite EDM genres have come from club and rave scenes that were started by LGBTQI artists and creators.

What Does The Pride Rainbow Mean?

Believe it or not, each color in the Pride flag represents something different. The original rainbow pride flag has six colors which represent the following:

Red: Life

Orange: Healing

Yellow: Sun

Green: Nature

Blue: Harmony

Violet: Spirit

A new version of the Pride flag was unveiled in 2018 when graphic designer Daniel Quasar added a five color chevron to the left side of the flag to represent inclusion within the LGBTQI community. The colors in the chevron represent the following:

White, pink and blue: Transgender pride

Brown, Black: people of color within the LGBTQI community

The Origin of Bicycle Day

Bicycle Day commemorates the day when Dr. Albert Hofmann, a Swiss scientist, took a world-changing bicycle ride while under the influence of LSD. On April 19, 1943, Hofmann ingested 250 micrograms of the substance—discovered by him in 1938—and experienced the first intentional acid trip. A lot has changed in the EDM community, but one thing remains the same: our love for the ever-evolving music scene and everything that comes with it—including some of the most incredible camping music festivals as far as the eye can see. Each year it seems the production levels, artists, outfits, camping amenities and overall experience gets better and better;  it’s an experience that will change your life like no 2-day parking lot rave you have to drive home from ever will.

First, we're covering the basics. Here are some commonly asked questions we get about camping festivals:

Where is the best place to camp at a music festival?

There are some spots that will make things easier, but no spots are bad at a camping festival! Look for camping spots that are close enough to resources like food or water, or the entrance to the festival itself so you can minimize how much extra walking you need to do. It's also a good idea to look for shade, which brings us to our next question:

How do you stay cool at a camping music festival?

Look for camping spots that are under trees or shade, because that will keep you cool as much as possible. You can also look for shade structures that will obstruct the morning or afternoon sun, making it easier to sleep in or stay cool in the afternoon. Get some extra ice for your water bottles, and bring cold towels to stick in ice water throughout the day that you can put on the back of your neck to stay cool.

Should you lock your tent at a festival?

If you feel more comfortable doing so, you can! Or, you can lock your personal belongings in your car and keep only your sleeping bag and pillows in your tent. Just be careful not to lose your keys!

Electric Daisy Carnival - Camp EDC

As we all know, EDC *usually* takes place the last weekend in May. This year, due to the pandemic, Insomniac & many other event giants made the tough call to postpone some of the biggest music festivals to October - which isn’t the worst thing that could’ve happened! EDC, and especially Camp EDC, is definitely an investment. Having a little extra time to save up, truly plan your outfits, food, & accommodations is probably a good thing considering my friends and I decided we’d full send EDC for the first time in 2019 about 2 months before going (*NOT* recommended!). What I am 100% recommending, however, is to DO CAMP EDC. Although I never did the whole “stay on the strip” thing, I can say with full confidence that camping was THE BEST WAY TO DO EDC. Not only do you have various sleeping options & the tents are already pre-built with AC units so you don’t die in the Vegas heat, but you also have easy & unlimited access to and from the festival!

Other perks of camping include but are not limited to: some of the most amazing coffee & lemonade stands you can walk up to every morning before heading over to goat yoga, fun vendors, rollerskating in the rink, pools & waterslides and of course, enjoying the DJ’s that come perform intimate sets on the campgrounds - it truly is all around magic!

In my humble opinion, Electric Forest is another right of passage in the music festival scene, right next to EDC. Before EDC ever had camping, Forest was the place to hitch up your tent, take off your shoes & get lost in a mystical forest away from the hustle and bustle of Vegas or any of the other Insomniac events. From Said The Sky’s Ocular Organ Set playing the piano with his fans, to the enchanting sounds of Rüfüs Du Sol coursing through the trees, this 4 day music festival is a mystical oasis for hippies, forest fairies & dreamers alike.

Make sure to check out the festival map to plan a meeting spot with your group, get acquainted with the campgrounds & check out where you’ll be camping. Unless you and your group of 20 or more decide to do group camping, you’ll want to get there early, since according to the website: “Campgrounds are assigned based on the flow of traffic and the parking crew’s work flow. HQ cannot guarantee campground placement for anyone arriving at any time, including those who are arriving on Wednesday.”

Typically a 4 day festival held every summer, this year the festival was postponed until 2022, leaving you plenty of time to plan & prepare! Make sure to check out the official Electric Forest website as well as other sources (YouTube is always my go-to when it comes to festival prep because you get some really honest first hand accounts!) to make sure you cover all of your bases!

Grab your headbang gang & head over to one of the most beautiful natural outdoor venues next to Red Rocks Amphitheater. Overlooking the Columbia River and now boasting 2 stages, Bass Canyon is filled with back drops & bass drops that will have you wondering what life was before you stepped foot in this dreamy canyon.

Although the festival itself begins on the 20th, campers are able to get to the site a day early to set up camp & enjoy Thursday’s pre-party (non-camping ticket holders are able to attend with the purchase of a Thursday pre-party ticket)!

Shambhala

I had no choice but to throw in this Canadian heavy hitter to the mix. Shambhala is a name that is thrown around so often and for good reason! From an incredible production to a lineup that’ll have you updating your passport REAL quick, the only qualm for US festival goers in my opinion really is the distance.

From Anti Up, Seven Lions & Rezz to What So Not, Malaa & Channel Tres - the Shambhala stages will have you teleporting to all kinds of different dimensions. When you do come back to earth between sets, make sure to hang a kind note on the Wish Tree, check out the artists at the Basscamp Art Gallery or simply grab your flotation devices and head to the Salmo River! Just make sure you adhere to the 8 Pillars & respect the river!

A creole slang word for “good time,” you’ll find no shortage of endorphin releasing activities like colorful parades, “yoga-roo” & running a little 5k for the Roo Run! That is when you’re not too busy making waves at Splash-A-Roo or catching them during a Tame Impala set!

When the temperature drops at night, wrap a pashmina around yourself for extra warmth, I promise it makes all the difference. Festivals can be stressful. There is a lot going on and you are surrounded by unfamiliar faces. If you’re feeling overstimulated, try wrapping yourself in your pashmina or throwing it over your head. Where is the Lux Rave Store?

The Lux Rave Store takes place each year during the week leading up to EDC Las Vegas in the Luxor Hotel & Casino. Follow the signs in the casino for directions to the store once you're at the hotel, or ask a hotel employee to guide you in the right direction.

When does the Lux Rave Store start and end?

You can shop the Lux Rave Store from May 15th through May 19th, 2024. We wanted to make sure that we were open through EDC weekend to allow you to grab anything you might need even if it's on the day of the event. RSVP here to be the first to know about all of the surprises we have in store! 

The main thing that sets EDC apart from other festivals is the crazy production and extent to which Insomniac, the production company behind EDC, decks out the festival. For the whole weekend, it feels like you’re stepping into a different universe. The art and production at EDC never misses, so here is a guide for some of the art to expect at EDC!

Stages

One of many ravers’ favorite parts about EDC is the stages and their design. EDC is iconic for having a huge main stage called kineticField that features a giant sculpture-like design, decorated with beautiful rainbow lights and lasers. Besides the main stage, there are plenty of other stages that have their own crazy production and designs, like circuitGrounds, which usually always has lots of LED screens, which are great for those who appreciate visuals in sync with the music.

These are just two of the many stages at EDC; there are so many stages, usually one for pretty much every sub-genre of EDM, like bassPod for those who love headbanging, quantumValley for those that want to vibe with the euphoric music of trance, neonGarden for the techno and house heads, and many more. 2024 will also bring a new stage called bionicJungle with a curated lineup of house artists. 

On top of the larger stages, there are lots of art cars roaming around that are decorated with their own theme and style as well, and are always fun to dance around while passing by to other stages or to other parts of the festival.

Art Installations

Along with the amazing stage design and music played at these stages, there are tons of other parts of EDC to enjoy. This festival has tons of art installations throughout the festival that are great places for photo ops, meet-up spots, and overall great pieces of art to appreciate. The best part about EDC is that since it takes place throughout the night, the lights and art are a bright contrast against the dark sky. These massive 3D superstructures look even better at night and many of them are interactive. Make sure to take some time to explore the many art scattered throughout the festival.

EDC Dancers and Performers

Something that took many ravers by surprise at EDC were the dancers and performers that walked through the festival. Some of them are circus performers walking around on stilts, some are playing with fire on some art structures and flying through the sky on trampolines. The performers just add another layer of creativity to the festival and the whimsical characters and dancers will make you feel like you are part of another world.

Downtown EDC

One of the newer additions to EDC is a part called Downtown EDC. This part of the festival features chill spots and funky bars that have various themes to them, such as a Mini Bar where all the furniture and cups were mini, a Tokyo-style karaoke bar, and some that have live performers and dancers at. Walking around Downtown EDC, you truly appreciate how much creativity and art is put into the festival, especially the little things outside of the music and stages.

Headliners

At EDC, the headliners, aka the DJs and artists performing at EDC, are one of the biggest parts of the art in the musical form. Each day, there are some of the biggest and most talented DJs playing on all of the stages. You can expect a wide variety of musical styles and genres and many of them have crazy visuals displayed on screen, along with laser and light shows that go with the music.

On top of the music, one of the biggest features that sets EDC apart from other festivals is the fireworks show that occurs each night during the music. Across the whole venue, there are hundreds of fireworks that go off throughout the sky and it is one of the prettiest sights during EDC. They recently added light up drones along with the firework show and it is honestly one of many ravers’ favorite parts about EDC.

You get to catch your favorite artist and enjoy the firework and light show all at once! And of course, the most important headliner is you! This is one of EDC’s quotes that what makes this festival different from others is the strong community that takes place at this festival. Each and every raver brings their own creativity and uniqueness to the festival, whether it is your dance style, your totem or flag, how you decorate your campsite, kandi- whatever it is, the passion that each raver brings to EDC is what makes this festival special. You really feel welcomed at EDC and it’s a place for self-expression alongside with other ravers who have the same passion.

Out of all of the festivals that take place here, EDC is a must for all ravers, new and seasoned. Every year is a different theme and every year it’s a different experience. Choosing an Area

There are tons of places and areas to stay in Las Vegas that are either in the thick of it all on The Strip or a little more off the beaten path in places like Summerlin or in an AirBnb around Vegas. Choosing which area is going to really change the whole vibe of ur trip, so make sure u choose the right area. Here is our advice on where to stay in Vegas during EDC:

On the Strip

The Las Vegas Strip is going to give you the classic EDC experience because it's centrally located and there is a lot going on. There are tons of hotels on the strip that range from luxury to budget, which we'll get into later, and there is always a lot going on.

If you only plan on going to EDC for one or two days and want to enjoy other things around Vegas on the other days I definitely recommend staying on the strip. There are tons of casinos, night clubs, day clubs, shopping, restaurants and even shows to check out. You definitely won't be bored!

Downtown/Old Las Vegas

One of the many secrets to EDC is to stay Downtown or in Old Las Vegas during the festival to take advantage of the shorter shuttle lines, faster ride to the festival and more affordable hotel rates. Old Las Vegas is a cute area that embraces the artsy side of the city and plays into the old neon you would have seen around Vegas in the 1900s.

There is a good mix of budget and luxury in this area, which again we'll get into later, and there is also a lot going on during any given weekend so again, you won't be bored if you take a night off of EDC or want to check things out during the day.

Off-Strip (AirBnb)

For bigger parties there are tons of options either right off the strip, in condos on the strip closer to Resorts World and the newer hotels on the North Strip area, or even in neighborhoods like Henderson or Summerlin (though these areas might be a bit far from the festival). If you do go the Airbnb route make sure that you know the area that the rental is in, or that you're ok with making the trek to the festival.

For a truly unique experience I recommend renting a mansion (there are a bunch near the Vegas airport right off of the strip) or luxury condo, especially if you're going with a big group. Airbnb has a whole category for Vegas mansions, so this could be the time to make ur Playboy dreams come true.

Camp EDC

EDC introduced camping options a couple of years ago which, I'll admit, seemed like the last thing I would want to do in such a hot place. However, I've heard nothing but good things about the camping situation at Camp EDC. The festival was moved to May to accommodate the new camping option the year it was introduced which significantly changed the heat problem.

The camping situation at EDC will get you a pretty luxe glamping experience in pre set up shift pods with either fully assembled beds or a more affordable option where u bring ur own gear. You can also bring ur own RV, which would be a great way to camp at EDC to avoid the traffic and long lines while bringing along the comfort of a hotel. You can learn more about Camp EDC here.

Top Hotels - On the Strip Luxury

If Las Vegas is known for one thing, it's luxury. There are quite a few luxury options for hotels on the strip and these are my best recommendations. These options also offer in-hotel entertainment such as a night or day club that will likely have some pretty killer events throughout the week leading up to EDC and over the weekend:

Resorts World Las Vegas

Resorts World is the newest resort on the strip that actually offers three hotel options at different tiers. The most affordable of the three is the Hilton, with the Conrad in the mid-tier and then Crockfords for its most luxurious option. Onsite the resort offers a night club and a day club called Zouk, tons of dining options, a great pool area, a casino and even a swanky top-floor bar for great views of the Strip (I recommend going at night).

Wynn/Encore Las Vegas

The Wynn compound offers some of the most luxurious experiences that the Strip has to offer. There are two hotels—Wynn and Encore—which are connected so the experiences are roughly the same. Encore Beach Club is one of the most famous day clubs in Las Vegas, which turns into a night club at night. There is also XS, another club in the hotel, and tons of luxury dining and shopping options. If you're going all out for EDC, this is the place to stay.

Venetian/Caesar's Palace/Bellagio

I'm grouping these two options together because they're more or less next to one another, but are by no means the same. Caesar's and Bellagio offer some truly luxe experiences and are located in the dead center of the Strip. Caesar's offers Omnia, a world-famous mega club that always goes off during EDC week, and Bellagio offers a stunning pool area to relax in while u decompress from the night before. Caesar's is also more recently the host to the Nobu Hotel—a truly stunning luxury experience with simplistic Japanese interior design.

The Venetian and The Palazzo offer more affordable as well as more luxury options as well, and have tons of entertainment and dining experiences that include Tao. Each room in the Venetian is a suite, so you'll get a living room area in addition to your bed.

The Cosmopolitan/Aria/NoMad/Waldorf

The area around the T-Mobile Arena is basically just a giant compound of luxury hotels with a few affordable options sprinkled here and there. I love this part of Vegas because it feels very futuristic—it's sort of like having a piece of Miami in Las Vegas. You really can't go wrong with any of the options listed above but each offer slightly different experiences. Both Aria and The Cosmopolitan offer a resort experience with night clubs like Jewel and Marquee, tons of dining options (including Carbone and Din Tai Fung for those of you on that side of TikTok), and will be major EDC hubs for meeting other ravers.

The NoMad and Waldorf are a bit more secluded and offer more luxury, but are fantastic options especially if you're familiar with either of those hotel chains.

MGM

Like Resorts World, MGM offers tiers for its hotel rooms that range from the more affordable side to the ultra-luxury. The MGM Grand is a great option for larger groups because they offer lots of suite options, and the MGM resort offers tons of entertainment, dining and shopping options including Hakkasan and Wet Republic, two of the most famous clubs on the Strip.

Budget-friendly - On the Strip

Luxor

The Luxor is a classic budget hotel that offers tons of entertainment while being a central hub for a lot of EDC ravers. It's also home to the Lux Rave Pop Up Shop, which is the annual savormeditation pop up where you can shop for last minute raver gear, meet new rave friends, and just take in the good vibes. Flamingo/LINQ

This is a great budget option because there are a lot of dining and entertainment options nearby, and it's pretty centrally located. There are lots of shuttles that go close to this hotel, and it's near the highway so u can easily get off the strip and head to the festival.

Treasure Island

Treasure Island is a great budget option for shopping and dining because it's right next to Fashion Show mall. It's also close to the highway for easy access to the festival, and the hotel itself is clean.

Old Las Vegas - Best Hotels

Circa

One of the newest Downtown hotels is Circa, which offers nice, new rooms and lots of entertainment in a new Strip-style resort hotel. This hotel offers walking access to the Fremont Street experience and easy access to shuttles on ur way to the festival.

Golden Nugget

This is a great affordable option located very centrally in Downtown Las Vegas for easy access to the shuttles. The rooms are clean and pretty updated despite it being an old hotel, and it brings the classic old Las Vegas vibes.

The D

The D is one of the more popular hotels in the Downtown area and also offers more of a resort experience. It's also located centrally for shuttles, entertainment and other old Las Vegas experiences. It was remodeled a couple of years ago so the hotel itself is pretty updated.

EDC will happen May 17th-19th at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway from Dusk till Dawn. It is truly one of the best festivals to hit up and is a favorite festival of many ravers, both experienced and new! One of the best parts of EDC is the stages and production, so here is a guide for stages for EDC.

kineticField

kineticField is the mainstage at EDC. It is the biggest one at this festival and usually features a giant and beautiful design following a theme. This year’s theme is yet to be announced but the mainstage and lineup never fails to impress even the most seasoned ravers. Every year, the design gets wilder, and going into the festival the first day, you never know what to expect so it is truly a great experience seeing the mainstage for the first time as the scenery gets darker and kineticField illuminates with rainbow lights and lasers.

circuitGrounds

On the opposite end of kineticField is the second biggest stage called circuitGrounds. This stage is a favorite for those who especially appreciate the production on top of the music. It is always filled with lots of LED screens and wraps around in a semi-circle fashion that makes you feel super immersed into the DJs that play there.

cosmicMeadow

This stage is one that many see when they first walk into the festival. This stage is where the festival kicks off with the EDC Opening Ceremony and usually features a guest for this event. This is the first stage that opens up earlier in the night so it is a great spot to catch a set in the warm sun as it slowly sets in the background. As the day turns into night, you can find many ravers sitting in the bleachers where this stage faces and it is honestly a perfect spot for those who want to chill and enjoy amazing DJs. There is also plenty of grass around this stage so you can find somewhere to lay around and enjoy the music.

neonGarden

One of the great things about EDC is that there are smaller stages that are dedicated to specific genres of EDM. At neonGarden, you will find many techno and house heads dancing around where the production seems minimal yet immersive and deep. You will find many Factory 93 DJs playing here and it is a great stage to be at to feel the deep vibrations of various house and techno music.

bassPod

If you’re feeling energetic, bassPod is the stage to be at. Headbangers gather at this stage to vibe to some of the best bass house, dubstep, trap and DnB artists in the EDM scene. The stage design here is unique and always features a crazy design that even has interactive parts that extend into the crowd. Make sure to check out this stage, grab a rail or friend, and headbang your way through the night at bassPod.

quantumValley

This stage is for those who want to be uplifted by the euphoric music known as trance. At quantumValley, you will be joined by many other Trance Fam ravers and experience some of the most ethereal trance DJs, as well as trippy sounds from psytrance as well. Recently, this stage became an open air megastructure with LED lights going all around the top. No matter the layout of the stage, it is one that all ravers should check out to enjoy some uplifting music.

wasteLand

This stage features some of the best hardstyle, hard core, and hard dance DJs. If you’re feeling upbeat, this stage is a must; you’ll get to experience fast tempos and hard bass and overall the most fun group of ravers out there! Many are going hard to the beats and sounds of hardstyle and you’ll see people dancing and enjoying the music with one another.

stereoBloom

At steroBloom, you’ll be grooving to house and tech house music all weekend long. This stage has some amazing house DJs and it’s always a party with shufflers on the side, and everyone from left to right dancing around. The design of this stage is one that you can’t miss, with bright lights all around and studded with daisies in the back.

BionicJungle

EDC's newest stage, BionicJungle, features a curated lineup of house music artists to groove to all night long. This stage is small but packs a punch and will. keep you dancing until dawn.

Art Cars

On top of the many bigger stages at EDC, you’ll also find lots of art cars scattered throughout the festival as well! Each of them have their own theme, such as a rockin’ pirate ship or a huge buggy car. Whatever the theme and music, it is always a fun time at these mini stages. You even get a chance to climb up and dance up on top alongside the DJ, so that is always a fun experience! There’s also secret and exclusive sets that take place at these art cars, so make sure you stop by to check them out while exploring the festival.

EDC never fails with its lineup; there’s usually a massive variety of DJs, so there’s always an amazing set taking place. The stages each have their own unique theme and style, and have a different vibe going on at them, so there’s always one to satisfy your needs, whether you want to headbang to some dubstep, shuffle your feet off to some house, muzz your way through the weekend- no matter the stage that you’re at, it’s always a party everywhere you go!

EDC Vegas is held over the course of three days at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and will take place this year on Friday, May 17th - Sunday, May 19th, 2024. According to weather averages, we will likely see temperature averages of 90s during the day and 70s at night. This is excellent news for EDC outfit planning this year. If you're staying in Las Vegas the festival isn't quite centrally located. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is about 18-20 miles off of the Las Vegas strip depending on where you're coming from. With traffic, that ride can easily go from 20 minutes to several hours, so you'll want to read on for our advice on how to get to EDC Las Vegas!

Getting to Vegas

Flying:

Flying into Vegas is really easy, especially if you're staying on or near the Strip area or Downtown. Most airlines have pretty affordable flights into Vegas because it's a popular destination, and you can fly direct from most places in the United States.

The airport is conveniently located right off of the Strip, making it really easy to get to your hotel from an Uber. Still, Uber in Vegas can get pricey, so expect to pay at least $20 depending on where you're staying, likely more. Some hotels also offer shuttles, so look into that if you want to save on Uber to and from the airport.

Driving:

With no traffic, Vegas is about a four hour drive from the Los Angeles area. Keep in mind that I said no traffic though, because on a normal weekend that can go up to five or even six hours with how many people regularly go to Vegas from LA for the weekend. During EDC expect traffic to get worse, so plan ahead and leave early if you think you'll need to.

You can get to Vegas quickly from other cities like Salt Lake and Denver via I-15 which cuts directly through Las Vegas. It's about a six hour drive from Salt Lake and 11 hours from Denver. It's certainly more than Los Angeles, but you're unlikely to hit traffic coming from that direction.

EDC encourages its attendees to rideshare to the festival as much as possible. Hit up local rave groups on Facebook to find a ride to Vegas from your area—you might just find a new rave fam!

Getting to the Festival

Shuttles:

EDC offers shuttles to and from the Speedway to many of the hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. Look for either your hotel or a hotel nearby to get the most direct access to the festival every day. You can get a shuttle pass on the EDC website here, which includes expedited security entry before you get to the festival to make things go a bit faster at the Speedway.

Crystal Visions Outfit

The shuttles can get pretty busy if you go at the same times as most of the crowds, so plan ahead if you want to skip the lines. I've never experienced the shuttles for myself, but I've heard horror stories about getting stuck in line for hours after the festival ends at sunrise. As much fun as it would be to stay until the end of the event, I'm also someone that would happily leave a little bit early to beat the crowds.

Rideshares and Taxis:

Uber and Lyft are a great option if you want something a bit more streamlined than the shuttle experience. While the shuttles are great, the luxury of a rideshare means that you don't have to stand in line to get on a shuttle on your way to and from the festival. However, these lines can get pretty lengthy as well and prices can skyrocket if you don't time your departures correctly.

Las Vegas also has tons of taxis available, and with the arrival of Uber several years ago taxis have had to get competitive with their prices. You might have a hard time finding a taxi at the Speedway to get back to the festival, but they can be a secret hack to saving some money on your way there each night.

Driving:

The drive to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is about 20-30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. This is a great option if you have a sober driver, though traffic can get pretty congested depending on when you're driving to or from the festival. General parking at EDC is free, though you can purchase premiere parking passes to get in and out of the lots a little bit easier.

Keep in mind that there are restrictions to parking. The festival doesn't allow tailgating and drinking alcohol in the parking lot is prohibited, as well as sleeping in your car or leaving your car at the festival once it ends.

Downtown Las Vegas may not have the glitz and glamour of the Las Vegas Strip, but it does have local favorites like a killer bar scene, the Downtown Arts District, and some of the original Las Vegas landmarks we all know and love. The area is also home to Life Is Beautiful festival, which takes place each September.

Celebrate Las Vegas Pride

Las Vegas is extremely hot in the summer, so many events that usually take place around then are moved to the spring and fall. Las Vegas Pride takes place in October, and although the bulk of the event is during the second weekend of October, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate Pride Month outside of the official festival. Catch a drag brunch on the strip or visit one of the many gay bars around the city.

As a household name in electronic dance music, the “Shake What Ya Mama” producer plans to contribute more of his no-boundaries-outlook and personal artistic vision of house music among the scene and share the togetherness of community among his fan base this year. This tech-house-shooting-star accomplished new levels of recognition in 2023 such as reaching millions of streams and headlining debut performances at festivals he once dreamed of like Tomorrowland 2023. 

This next musical chapter in his discography has become quintessential to him like the essence of water. Inspired and elated to share what is to come, I, Mary Mason, at savormeditation had the privilege to interview Bleu Clair about the album art and meaning behind “Underwater” as well as his ever-evolving relationship to house music. 

iHR: Thank you so much for your time and congratulations on your newest release, “Underwater”! Despite your irresistible use of basslines and percussion in this track, the lyrics allude to vulnerability and fear; with the fear, it causes one to seek refuge to hide, “try to breathe underwater”. What inspired you to produce these lyrics that feel universal? 

Bleu Clair: Thank you for having me! I just found that vocal sample on Splice, and I fell in love with how it sounds and the lyrics during the first listen. But, the original sample’s BPM was quite different and I had to do a lot of processing on that vocal. Nonetheless, I’m really happy with the outcome. 

iHR: The album cover art for “Underwater” contains the Bleu Label stamp that reads: “New Age of House Music”. Can you tell us what this “New Age of House Music” means to you? How do you want to further support this new age with your music or creative vision?

Bleu Clair: It’s a tag that I always put on my artwork, merch, and show flyers. It’s just that I feel like the house music scene has always been here for a long time and I love the genre a lot, but I wanted to try to do something new on it without sacrificing the main element of house music.

iHR: If I’m not mistaken, you’re the second DJ (other than Angger Dimas) from Indonesia to tour in the US. How would you like to see the EDM scene give more representation and inclusivity to DJs from different backgrounds? 

Bleu Clair: Yeah, and now we also have Papa Khan and Ootoro touring the States–I’m really proud of them. We feel like our music received more appreciation in the states compared to what we experience back home. But, it is understandable since dance music (especially house and dubstep like what Papa Khan is doing) is not the mainstream thing there. 

iHR: As a lover of tech house, it was a dream to experience your B2B set with San Pacho at Decadence Arizona 2023! You both made the crowd feel extremely special on the dance floor during New Year’s. How did that experience change your opinion or perception of B2B performances altogether? 

Bleu Clair: Thank you! That set was our second set together, and both of them are completely unplanned. Patrik is a good friend and very talented producer, so we just play what we like, try to match the vibe with each other. Super happy with how it went though haha!

iHR: I’ve been a fan of your music since 2022 and you remain as one of my favorite tech house artists! Surprisingly enough, I was also listening to a lot of lo-fi, ambient electronica when I came across your track “Hyperspace”. What inspired you to collaborate with Teza Sumendra on this mellow, relaxing track that sounds different from the rest of your discography? I LOVE this genre-bending track by the way! 

Bleu Clair: I’ve always been a big fan of Teza and I think his singing is some of the best that I’ve ever heard. So, I sent him a couple demos, and he liked the hyperspace instrumental demo. Funny thing is: it only took around 15 minutes to record the whole vocal for that song. He works very quickly and efficiently.

iHR: Your fans absolutely love the groovy feel of your BLEUPRINT mixes! Do you feel as if you have more creative freedom to experiment with this side project? Also, would you ever want to experiment with an EDM subgenre outside of tech house? 

Bleu Clair: I always try to release as many unreleased tracks on BLEUPRINT mixes as possible just so I can test which tracks receive good feedback and which do not. Sometimes I also release some unreleased tracks I like from DJs. Yes, the first time I tried to make music on a laptop, I started making dubstep and bass music since I was really influenced by Skrillex at that time. Bleu Clair: Local food in the city that I’m visiting! Everytime I visit a city I’ve never been to before, I always google “famous food spot in x city” before going there. 

iHR: Your evolving discography has been wonderful to follow! What is next in store for you this 2024?

Any '90s rave babe remembers the neon fever dreams of Lisa Frank back in our childhoods. The colorful prints and designs were EVERYTHING and are still cherished today. Sadly the company is no longer making new products, but Lisa Frank stationary and posters still live on in our hearts, minds, and our personal style. 

What should I wear to a rave?
